U.S. Representative from Maine and uncle of George Andrew Peters, Jr.; practiced law in Bangor, Me.; state legislator and attorney general; Republican; elected to 40th, 41st, and 42nd U.S. Congresses and then served as justice of Maine's Supreme Judicial Court (1873-1883) becoming chief justice from 1883 until Jan. 1, 1900.
